FORMER TOOL BASSIST PAUL D’AMOUR JOINS MINISTRY

Original Tool bassist Paul D’Amour has joined Ministry, frontman Al Jourgensen‘s industrial metal bastion, Revolver reported Wednesday (May 29). The founding and former member of Tool performed on the rockers’ early releases Opiate and Undertow. He’ll see his live debut with Ministry on tour starting next month.

In a statement to the magazine, Jourgensen recalled the first time he met D’Amour (pictured above in 1993, third from left) at Lollapalooza in 1992. But in the present, it looks like the new recruit is also contributing to Ministry in a recording situation: “He was recently here in the studio working on some new stuff!” the bandleader said.

“I used to live with Timothy Leary, and he had given me these bottles of liquid LSD to bring on tour,” Jourgensen recalled. “I’d put two drops in my bottle of whiskey that I’d bring onstage. I’d drink about half the bottle during a show. So we were on Lollapalooza in ’92, I think it was San Francisco, and when we came offstage there were these two guys who were like, ‘Great show, dude!’ So I gave them my bottle of Bushmills, but I forgot that I had put LSD in it. So they drank it and they were tripping balls for, like, two or three days. They didn’t know what was going on and they were freaking out. They were ready to call suicidal hotlines. It turned out to be Paul and Maynard from Tool! … But he actually thanked me for that moment because he said it really got Tool going into being a psychedelic band.”

The singer added, “Pretty cosmic, right?”

Six years ago, D’Amour’s contemporary post-Tool outfit Lesser Key released their “Intercession” music video. The act’s 2014 self-titled EP was helmed by producer Sylvia Massy, who also worked on Tool’s Undertow.
