Hear Chelsea Wolfe New Track “Deranged For Rock & Roll”

via Revolver Magazine

Just over a week ahead of the release of her forthcoming record Birth of ViolenceChelsea Wolfe has released another gorgeous song from the folk-leaning collection. “Deranged for Rock & Roll” is an airy paean for Wolfe’s love of creating music, washed in acoustic reverb and celebrated, in its Gilbert Trejo–directed music video, through the lens of a series of country-western vignettes.

At the center of the tale is Wolfe, the singer-songwriter performing the ethereal track in a sparsely populated bar as a newlywed couple dressed in their best True Romance–esque finery enters the establishment. While scenes from their love story play out, the focus shifts back and forth to the priest who performed the ceremony as he solemnly walks nearby, holding his icons and vestments in lonely worship. Scoring it all is the lovely, weightless crooning of the new cut, the strongest of the Birth of Violencesingles thus far.

The dual storylines converge once more as the main players gather in the local bar to see Wolfe perform, and the simple strains of the chorus, “I’m deranged for rock & roll” ring out over and over, a droning lullaby to soothe them while they drink. A steady crescendo to the end peaks as the camera focuses once more on Wolfe, the glue holding this romantic scene together.

“‘Deranged for Rock & Roll’ is my love song to music,” Wolfe says of the song. “Every time I ever tried to walk a different path, music always called me back home to it. It’s in my blood; it’s my one source of true peace. I love its chaos and its rough edges, and I love the way it can bring understanding and comfort. I belong to music, and it to me. I feel Gilbert’s video illustrates that unnamed pull towards something so well. My character is destined to sing the same song over and over in this purgatory of a desert bar, while different people come through the town and begin to feel the pull as well, drawing them into this vortex to stay for good.”

Birth of Violence is out September 13th on Sargent House Records. Pre-order a copy here and see below for Wolfe’s upcoming acoustic tour dates, also featuring Wolfe’s labelmate Ioanna Gika.
